The ESM Pills, a poster series developed by the communication & outreach officiers at AWI, aim to devliver simple explanations for various ESM-relevant topics. Scientists from all kind off disciplines, as well as students and everybody else who is interested in modelling in general, can inform themselves about what is goint on in the world of modelers.

On November 26th and 27th, 2020 the annual meeting of the Pilot Lab ExaESM took place. The project progress of the past months of each topic was discussed. The meeting was splitted in plenary sessions to inform the project members about the current status and in breakout groups of the individual topics to plan the next steps. Additionally talks by Panos Adamidis about the I/O strategies in the ICON model and by Estela Suarez about the „SEA“ projects were given.

On February 4th and 5th, 2020, the ESM User Forum took place at Research Centre Jülich. 31 ESM scientists met at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre in front of the machine hall to discuss issues and news related to the ESM partition of JUWELS and to prepare for the GPU-based JUWELS Booster, which is scheduled for end of 2020 and will be also equipped with an ESM partition.

On the 11-12 November 2019 partners of the PilotLab met in Bremen to officially kick off the project.

The Jülich Supercomputing centre is leading a new Helmholtz project, that aims to lay the foundation for new breakthroughs in Earth system modelling (ESM) on future exascale computer architectures.
